A string of coordinated robberies struck the north side of Chicago early this morning, causing concern among residents and prompting a community alert from local authorities. According to the Chicago Police Department, a series of thefts occurred across the 17th, 20th, and 24th Districts where victims were suddenly accosted by a group of assailants. The perpetrators, who traveled by car, approached individuals walking in the neighborhood before robbing them of their belongings.
The crimes were reported in many locations including the 3400 block of W. Waveland Ave, and continued in close succession to other blocks like the 3100 block of W. Grace St, with the spree lasting approximately one hour. In several cases, robbers resorted to physical violence, using their hands, feet, and possibly blunt objects to subdue the victims. The incidents have rattled locals and put the community on high alert.
Detailed descriptions of the assailants have been released by the officials. Three light-skinned African American or Hispanic males, aged between 18 to 25, wearing hooded sweatshirts and dark face coverings, were spotted in a white Kia Optima which bore Illinois license plates. Investigators are scouring the vicinity for surveillance video and any witnesses that may lead to the apprehension of these individuals.
In response to the crimes, the police are urging citizens to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities. "Always be aware of your surroundings," the department warned, adding that if residents find themselves in a dangerous situation, it's crucial to try and recall any distinctive marks or features of the assailants. However, they stressed the importance of not pursuing the perpetrators, but instead, providing all information to law enforcement. Individuals who may have witnessed these incidents are encouraged to come forward. For emergencies, residents should immediately dial 9-1-1 and wait for authorities at the scene when possible.
