A fugitive wanted in connection with a deadly 2021 shooting at a Kroger grocery store in Sandy Springs was finally apprehended in Ohio. Davonte Lavonne Childs, 27, was arrested by a coalition of law enforcement agencies including the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Authorities have been on Childs' trail since the shooting, which took place in August 2021 at a Kroger store's parking lot on Dunwoody Club Drive – where he allegedly shot 22-year-old Yemi Mabiaku five times in the back resulting in his death, and another victim survived injuries; the incident was believed to be related to a drug deal gone awry, as reported by WSB-TV.
The capture took place in Euclid, a suburb of Cleveland, where Childs was found hiding inside a residence. When authorities arrived to make the arrest, Childs pointed a gun at the officers, resulting in a brief standoff before he surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Upon his arrest, law enforcement officers located two firearms in Childs' possession, now he is detained in a Cleveland jail awaiting extradition back to Georgia to face homicide charges, as the detailed coordination between Georgia and Ohio authorities finally culminated in Childs' capture after a persistent two-year search.
