Portland's stage was left cold and dark this past January as a fierce ice storm caused cancellations of the much-acclaimed "The Lion King" at the Keller Auditorium. However, fans who were left with unused tickets can breathe a sigh of relief. Broadway in Portland has officially announced that the show will make a triumphant return for a two-week engagement in the fall of 2025, giving the city's theater enthusiasts something to eagerly wait for.
Those with tickets left void due to the weather-related shutdown will not have to just sit and brood. They have been granted presale access to the upcoming 2025 shows as a concession. "We are thrilled that, with the support of our dedicated partners at Broadway in Portland, we'll be able to share the joy of The Lion King again with audiences at Keller Auditorium in 2025," Jack Eldon, of the Disney Theatrical Group, stated in a sentiment shared by KOIN. Dates for the new performances are yet to be announced, but the promise of the Circle of Life has certainly been extended to the local fans.
The January deep freeze saw a slew of shows scuppered, with a total of eight performances axed during the mid-month chill. If anything, this only built up more anticipation for the next roar of the lion on Portland's stage. As noted by OregonLive, even a scheduled make-up matinee could only narrowly proceed amidst the daunting weather conditions. All this has only fanned the flames of excitement for the eventual return of Simba and his pride.
For those with an immediate craving for all things Pride Rock, there's a silver lining ready to sparkle through the clouds—2024 will see the release of "Mufasa: The Lion King," a prequel directed by none other than Barry Jenkins of "Moonlight" fame. As wittily pointed out by Willamette Week, "You either die a critical darling or live long enough to get your hands on intellectual property from Disney." Portland's pride will have to be patient but can rest assured the wait to be back in the savannah under the spotlight will surely be worth it.
