Peoria's main thoroughfare is scheduled to receive much-needed attention, but prepare for potential traffic delays. According to a City of Peoria announcement, Olive Avenue from 99th Avenue to the Loop 101 freeway is undergoing renovations. Originally planned for early February, inclement weather postponed the work to the weekends of February 26 and March 1 – 4. Expect road closures from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday each weekend.
City of Peoria's Streets Division and its big-rig contractor will be milling the streets – that's city-speak for tearing up the old road to lay a smooth new one. They're laying down an asphalt pavement overlay, but concessions have been made to try and keep at least one lane rolling in each direction during the work. Cut-throughs may attempt to momentarily halt as crews pass driveways and the quieter offshoots of the main thoroughfare.
Local residents and businesses, you're not in the dark. The city's been sending out details about what to expect when the bulldozers and steamrollers hit your patch. They're trying to keep the Olive Avenue access live, but you might want to map out a Plan B just in case.
The crews will be hustling both day and night to wrap this up by mid-March, fingers crossed that the skies stay clear. Got a gripe, a tip, or need a quick update on how to navigate the construction site? Peoria has set up a 24/7 project hotline at 602-532-6250. Don’t hesitate to swiftly pick up the phone; they're standing by to sort out your streetscape queries.
