A peaceful Sunday afternoon was shattered when violence erupted at Pottawattomie Park in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood. A 19-year-old woman was killed and three others were injured in a shooting that unfolded whilst children played and families enjoyed the park's tranquility, according to police. "Two unknown offenders had approached a group in the park and shot in the group’s direction, hitting a woman in the chest," the Chicago Tribune reported.

Following the gunfire, residents near the scene were thrown into chaos, with some choosing to offer aid rather than retreat from danger. Madeline Oklesen and her friends, hearing the shots and subsequent cries for help, rushed to the young woman's side to provide first aid. "At first, we thought the bullet was in her neck, but it was in her heart, and so we just applied pressure," Oklesen related in an interview obtained by ABC7 Chicago. Despite their efforts, and the quick arrival of emergency services after the shooting, which happened just after 3:30 p.m. The 19-year-old woman, whose chest was struck by a bullet, was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m. at Ascension Saint Francis Hospital.

The attack also left three injured. A 22-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her foot was taken to Swedish Hospital in good condition, while two men, aged 20 and 19, were transported to Saint Francis Hospital, also in good condition—one suffered a gunshot wound to his forehead, and the other to his hip. ABC7 Chicago reported that one of the victims, before being aided by paramedics, made it to the Fire Department’s Engine 102 on their own, a short distance away.

No arrests have been reported in the wake of the shooting, with witnesses stating the suspects fled northbound on Winchester Avenue. Families of the victims are left seeking answers and justice, while the local community grapples with the weight of yet another senseless act of violence on its streets. "She deserves so much better. I don't even know her, but I was there when she took her last breath," a heartbroken Oklesen told ABC7 Chicago, calling for a greater communal resolve to "take care of each other." Chicago police continue their investigation and urge anyone with information to come forward to aid in bringing those responsible to justice.
