Oakland County is gearing up for a political showdown as The Detroit Free Press reports that former President Donald Trump is slated to host a rally at the Elite Jet Center in Waterford Township this Saturday, aiming to drum up support ahead of Michigan’s GOP primary. Doors will swing open at 4 p.m. for the 7 p.m. event, with the public welcome to attend, space permitting.
The campaign stop, Trump's first in the state since last autumn, comes as early voting kicks off in Michigan, a state he narrowly won in 2016 but lost in 2020, Trump has been on the trail, having recently visited South Carolina and is now turning his attention to Michigan's primary scheduled for February 27 where a fraction of the delegates will be chosen before the major selection occurs at district-level GOP conventions as noted by The Detroit News.
Trump, who remains the favorite for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic incumbent Joe Biden, is facing competition from Nikki Haley, his former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and former South Carolina governor, despite his anticipated frontrunner status, the race heats up as the pivotal Michigan GOP primary draws near.
Biden, who has already made a foray into the Michigan campaign circuit with stops at a restaurant and a UAW hall earlier this month, took the state from Trump by about 154,000 votes in the last presidential election, and the anticipation for a potential rematch is palpable, with Biden endorsing the UAW and the former president chiding the transition to electric vehicles during a stop at a nonunion auto supplier's plant in Macomb County last year, WXYZ reports that those interested in attending the upcoming rally can sign up through Trump’s campaign site.
