The Twin Cities are gearing up to play host to Rotary International's 120th annual convention, set for a five-day extravaganza between May 26-30, 2029. Announced via the City of Bloomington's official website, this massive event is expected to draw over 15,000 attendees and bring a hefty financial boost estimated at $30.4 million in sales to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.
These urban hubs are preparing to fully welcome global Rotary members, looking to significantly impact local hospitality and tourism sectors. Bloomington's Mayor Tim Busse expressed excitement about the upcoming convention. "Bloomington is looking forward to working with Minneapolis and St. Paul to quickly make the Rotary International 2029 convention a huge success," Busse said, with his remarks detailed in the official news release. The Mayor's enthusiasm, grounded in his own affiliations with Rotary #9 in Minneapolis, suggests that the Twin Cities are poised to deliver an unforgettable experience anchored by the Mall of America and a solid track record in handling international visitors.
Minnesota and Iowa Rotary clubs teamed up to secure the winning bid, marking a notable occasion as Minneapolis has not hosted the event since 1974. Tom Gump, Chair of the Host Operating Committee, conveyed his thrill and readiness for the event. "We're thrilled that Minneapolis will once again host Rotary's biggest gathering," Gump told the City of Bloomington in their official announcement. In collaboration with local government and tourism bureaus, the committee intends to organize a top-tier convention experience.
The gathering isn't just about networking and enjoyment; Rotary members across the globe are known for rolling up their sleeves to tackle significant humanitarian challenges. "I am excited to welcome Rotary members from across the globe to the Twin Cities and the State of Minnesota for their international convention in 2029," Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz articulated in the news release. Reflecting on Rotary's mission, he emphasized the importance of their global initiatives that vigorously aim to improve lives and empower communities everywhere.
Rotary International prides itself on connecting 1.4 million people from nearly 46,000 clubs worldwide. They are committed to addressing crucial humanitarian issues, which include the striving towards a polio-free world. Their philanthropic arm, The Rotary Foundation, has notably poured more than $5.5 billion into service projects over the past century. With such a significant convention on the horizon, the Twin Cities seem to be on the cusp of both economic and cultural enrichment at a global scale as they prepare to host a mosaic of change-makers in 2029.
