A 19-year-old Saint John's University wrestler from Blooming Prairie is in critical condition after his truck left Highway 30 and rolled early Monday morning in Dodge County, just a mile and a half from his hometown. Bo Zwiener was driving a 2011 Ford F-150 east on Highway 30 in Westfield Township when the vehicle went off the roadway, according to the Minnesota State Patrol crash report. He sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash.
According to KNSI, the Dodge County Sheriff's Office and Blooming Prairie Fire and EMS both responded to assist at the scene in Westfield Township. The State Patrol crash report logged the rollover at 5:11 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Highway 30 and 115th Avenue, noting that the road was dry and that alcohol was not suspected as a factor, per MSP Crash Updates. The report also states that Zwiener was not wearing a seat belt and that the truck's airbag deployed.
The crash site sits roughly 1.5 miles east of Blooming Prairie, in Westfield Township, which borders the town along the Steele and Dodge County line, as reported by KROC News. Zwiener was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System's Austin Medical Center for emergency evaluation and care, the station's report notes.
A Decorated Career on the Mat
Zwiener wrestled for the Westfield co-op program out of Blooming Prairie High School, a partnership serving students from Blooming Prairie and Hayfield. He finished sixth at 132 pounds as a sophomore and fifth at 133 pounds as a junior, building a resume as a three-time state entrant and two-time state place winner.
His senior season brought him to the Minnesota State High School League Class A 139-pound state championship match, where he finished as the state runner-up, according to FloWrestling. Before heading to college, Zwiener also set the all-time program record for career wrestling wins at Westfield with 153 victories and 89 pins, returning to the mat after recovering from foot surgery the previous fall, per The Guillotine. In 2024, he was one of 38 high school juniors statewide selected for the Minnesota State High School League ExCel Award, which recognizes achievement in academics, athletics, and community service, according to NCSA.
Saint John's Program Rallies Around Its Sophomore
Zwiener committed to the Saint John's Johnnies in 2024 and is now a sophomore on the wrestling team. The program posted a support message on social media Tuesday, describing him as a tough competitor, a great teammate, and an important part of the Johnnie wrestling family, and asked people to keep Zwiener, his family, and those close to him in their thoughts and prayers.
The statement came under the leadership of head coach Alex Van Krevelen, whom Saint John's University appointed in April, months ahead of Zwiener's sophomore season, according to Saint John's Athletics. Van Krevelen had previously led Shakopee High School to back-to-back Class AAA state runner-up finishes before taking over the Johnnies program.
Unbelted Rollovers Remain a Persistent Risk
Minnesota's seat belt law is a primary enforcement statute, meaning officers can stop and ticket unbelted motorists without any other violation, carrying a base fine of $25 that can climb past $100 with court fees, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Even with statewide seat belt usage reaching 94.7% in 2024, unbelted occupants accounted for roughly 52% of the state's occupant traffic fatalities in multi-year tracking, the agency's data show.
The state recorded 370 traffic fatalities in 2025, a 22% drop from 471 the year before and the lowest annual total since 2019, per the same agency's July figures. Rural highway rollovers like the one that injured Zwiener remain a focus of the state's ongoing Toward Zero Deaths safety campaigns, which target speed, distraction, and restraint usage on roads like Highway 30.
