In an event that disrupted air travel once again, a United Airlines flight was diverted to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Wednesday morning following a "potential security concern," as reported by the airline. Flight 1533, a Boeing 787 originally bound from Newark Liberty International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport, was rerouted after crew members were alerted of the situation. Upon landing at O'Hare around 7:40 a.m., the plane was met by local law enforcement, and all 202 passengers deplaned, according to a Chicago Sun-Times report.
In a statement from United, the airline assured that "the flight landed safely and met local law enforcement upon arrival." Despite the tense situation, officials have not released further details surrounding the exact nature of the security concern. The airline has indicated that passengers can expect the flight to continue to Los Angeles later in the afternoon, as mentioned in the same statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. The crew of nine aboard Flight 1533 was also confirmed safe by sources from United.
This incident arrives on the heels of another in-flight disturbance that occurred just a day prior. An American Airlines flight heading to O'Hare from Albuquerque had to return to its point of origin due to a "passenger disturbance," as revealed by officials. According to an NBC Chicago report, the American Airlines flight 1219 had landed back in Albuquerque International Sunport around 2:40 p.m., and the passenger causing the commotion was met by the police. The FAA is currently investigating the matter further, though no connections between these two incidents have been suggested.
With air travelers already on edge over recent years due to increasing flight interruptions, these successive instances of security concerns do little to ease wary passengers. Kellie Bartoli, a spokesperson for the Chicago police, confirmed officers were dispatched to O'Hare following the United flight's diversion. As for the passengers of Flight 1533, United's statement promised continued service as law enforcement wraps up its investigation into a disruption that grounded their West Coast journey, even if just for a few unexpected hours.
