The pursuit, captured on video, involved the minor navigating a stolen silver Honda Civic recklessly through the county's streets, causing property damage and risking lives. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the vehicle was stolen at gunpoint in DeKalb County earlier that day.
The chase came to a head as the teenage driver, discovered to be armed with an AR-14 pistol, crashed the car into mailboxes and collided with another vehicle. "We see it more than we want to see. In my 37-year career, it's become common. And you think of a 14-year-old boy. What was your son doing at 14? Playing ball, probably," Sheriff Babb told FOX 5. His comments underscore a growing concern for youth involvement in violent crimes within the region.
The incident was brought to a close without gunfire, and fortunately, no individuals were reported injured during the intense ordeal. Upon his arrest, the juvenile suspect was confronted by deputies and complied with their orders to drop the weapon and get on the ground. His actions after the crash suggested a deliberate choice to emerge with a weapon in hand, a detail that caught the eye of Fayette County's law enforcement. "From the dynamics of the crash, he would have had to find that weapon and bail with that weapon," Sheriff Babb explained in a statement observed by FOX 5.
Following the chase, the teen was charged with multiple felonies, including theft by receiving and possession of a firearms during the commission of a felony. Reflecting on the incident, the authorities are now working in conjunction with the ATF to trace the origin of the firearm.
