An 18-year-old has been nabbed by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in connection with a high-end heist that occurred last December at a Chanel boutique in Northwest D.C. The arrest was the result of determined detective work following the brazen robbery that left a security officer covered in fire extinguisher residue as the suspects made off with designer goods.
The heist, which unfolded on a busy Sunday evening at the 900 block of I Street, saw five individuals storm the store. The group's tactics included using a fire extinguisher to not only distract but to directly assault a Special Police Officer, while they brazenly snatched merchandise. Following the incident, MPD detectives embarked on a methodical investigation which led them to identify Romello Marquez as a suspect involved in the robbery attempt.
According to a statement from MPD, with the help of the U.S. Marshal’s Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, Marquez was arrested yesterday. Hailing from Northeast D.C., the young man now faces charges related to armed robbery attempts.
The MPD has revealed little about the ongoing investigation or about the other four suspects who remain at large. However, the arrest sheds light on the relentless pursuit by law enforcement to close in on those who brazenly challenge the safety and security of workers and businesses. The case against Marquez will likely unfold further in the coming weeks, as MPD continues to to actively follow leads on the remaining suspects.
