Tragedy struck early Sunday in Chicago's Austin neighborhood when a 19-year-old woman was killed and four others were wounded in a shooting, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Police report that the victims, three of them teenagers, were inside a business after 1 a.m. when attackers opened fire and then fled the scene. The woman, shot in the head, was pronounced dead at the location, and a 17-year-old girl, struck in the leg, is in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.
The other victims, a 20-year-old woman, and two more teens aged 16 and 19, suffered leg wounds but are in good condition in the hospital. The exact motive for the shooting, which fractured the early hours in the 5300 block of West Madison Street, remains a mystery, with no suspects in custody. Area Four detectives are on the case, Chicago police informed ABC7 Chicago.
As authorities combed through the scene searching for leads, the aftermath impacted morning transit as well. Chicago Transit Authority buses were rerouted from Madison and Laramie, causing temporary changes for commuters, although by 6 a.m., regular routes were restored. The investigation is ongoing, and there is a call for witnesses to step forward with any information that may lead to the apprehension of the shooter or shooters.
