An airboat mishap in the swamps of Miami-Dade County led to a multi-agency rescue operation Friday afternoon. The vessel flipped over in the Everglades, throwing its passengers into the water, all of whom were eventually rescued. The incident occurred south of the well-trafficked Tamiami Trail and west of Krome Avenue, according to Local 10 News.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, U.S. park rangers, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were to quickly respond to the scene. Bystanders witnessed as survivors were brought hastily to safety on other airboats. The events unfolded near Coopertown Airboats, as shown by aerial footage from Sky 10, although it remains unclear if the airboat was owned by Coopertown or another company. "Sky 10 video showed Miami-Dade police and fire rescue crews, along with U.S. park rangers and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, converging at Coopertown Airboats," reported Local 10 News.
Firefighters and medics assessed the situation, providing first aid to one individual who, fortunately, did not require hospitalization. This information was revealed by both Local 10 News and WSVN, stating, "According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, one person was assessed for injuries but was not taken to the hospital." No further injuries were reported following the accident.
The exact circumstances that led the airboat to quickly flip remain unknown. WSVN added that "the boat was presumably out on a tour in the Everglades" when the incident happened. Investigations are likely to follow to determine the cause of the accident and to prevent similar occurrences in the future. As the story develops, more details are expected to surface.
