A sprawling narcotics operation in the heart of Buckhead was brought to a screeching halt when Atlanta Police Department officers, executing a well-timed raid, confiscated drugs and cash valued at over $2 million from a luxury high-rise apartment. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, an impressive payload of 580 pounds of marijuana, sizable quantities of psilocybin mushrooms, THC-infused edibles and vape pens, and 22 bottles of promethazine were seized. Investigators also discovered assorted THC-laced cereals and rounded up over $100,000 in cold hard cash during the operation.
Members of the APEX Unit, a specialized division of the Atlanta Police, unveiled the fruits of their labor to press on Thursday afternoon. In a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, Lt. Robert Albertini linked the narcotics trade to increasing crime rates in the area, insisting that even a substance as seemingly innocuous as marijuana can have drastic social consequences. The anonymous tip that sparked the investigation pointed authorities towards the AMLI 3464 apartment complex on Roxboro Rd., prompting immediate police action. "It was immediate because when you're dealing with quantities like this, drugs are here today and gone tomorrow," Lt. Albertini told 11Alive.
The bust led to the arrest of two individuals, though their identities have not been released pending further investigation. Police believe that the drugs, which include 1,600 THC chocolate candy bars and 39.5 pounds of various THC edibles, may have been targeted at a younger demographic, spanning from high school to college-aged. The department fears that the merchandise could escalate into violent altercations, as Lt. Albertini expressed, "We know that the crime in Buckhead, particularly homicides, last year came about from drug-related violence. So, some people, some of the viewers, will say, 'It's just marijuana.' Well, hold it right there because it's not just marijuana. It's the collateral damage that comes from when people get robbed for the marijuana and the innocent victims that are targeted here," as reported by 11Alive.
The Atlanta Police Department has not taken a sigh of relief just yet in light of these arrests. Lt. Albertini stressed the unending demands of narcotics policing, affirming, "Oh, there's always more. There's always more. There's no days off for the narcotics unit," in an interview with 11Alive. Amidst an ongoing battle against drugs in Atlanta, the APEX Unit's significant bust signifies just one more victory in what appears to be an inexhaustible war.
