An Austin gang leader has dodged his day in court and is now the target of a manhunt. Louis Phillip Reyes, 32, a known felon and gang honcho, failed to show up for the opening testimony of his trial in Williamson County, resulting in a 45-year prison sentence handed down in his absence for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The jury found Reyes guilty after he made himself scarce while taunting law enforcement with social media posts that suggest he was planning his escape, KVUE reports.

With previous arrests, including one for nabbing an AR-15 from a police vehicle and flaunting it on Facebook, Reyes has made a reputation for himself in the crime books of Austin. And as for the most recent road rage incident that landed him a hefty sentence, he waved a gun at another driver back in 2021. When the boys in blue pulled him over, they found a pistol within his arm's reach, according to FOX 7 Austin.

After realizing the gangster they convicted was prowling free, some jurors came forward with safety concerns, having observed Reyes too close for comfort during court breaks. Despite fears about their anonymity being compromised, they fulfilled their civic duties under less-than-ideal conditions. District Attorney Shawn Dick lauded their courage, stating, "I am deeply appreciative of the jury's service and their dedication to delivering justice in this challenging case," as per KVUE.

Authorities have issued an open warrant for Reyes' arrest, urging the public to reach out to 911 should they spot him. Anonymous leads can be dropped at Williamson County Crime Stoppers, either through their website or by dialing 1-800-253-7867. In a statement obtained by FOX 7 Austin, DA Dick reassured the public that "We will continue to work tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to apprehend Mr. Reyes and ensure he faces the consequences of his actions. The safety of our community is paramount."
