John Paul Aguirre, the man involved in a fatal shooting in southeast Austin over a year ago, has been sentenced to 12 years behind bars after a guilt plea on March 7, as per court documents. The 22-year-old perpetrator, convicted of murder, will benefit from a jail time credit of 799 days, according to records obtained by KXAN.
The incident, which took place in an apartment complex along the 4500 block of East Riverside Drive, claimed the life of Rony Adaly Hernandez, aged 30. Despite emergency efforts at the scene, Hernandez was declared deceased by responding officials. Witnesses reportedly saw Aguirre leaving the scene shortly after the sound of gunshots erupted, a narrative revealed in court filings. Further investigations indicated that Hernandez had survived an earlier shooting in November 2021, where Aguirre was also implicated as the suspect.
Details of the case were further clarified by reports published on March 14, with FOX 7 Austin citing the Austin Police Department's identification of both victim and assailant. Officers who responded to the fatal incident on January 18 found Hernandez already suffering from critical injuries. An autopsy carried out the following day confirmed that Hernandez fell victim to gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The quick apprehension of Aguirre was credited to the Lonestar Fugitive Taskforce, which arrested him on an outstanding warrant the day after the shooting. His criminal charges mounted with a first-degree murder warrant, alongside an additional family violence/strangulation warrant, for which bonds were set at hefty sums. Local law enforcement has appealed to the public for any additional information, urging potential witnesses to contact the APD Homicide tip line or use their respective online platforms to share valuable insights into the incident.
