The Austin Police Department is once again cracking down on drunk drivers, this time during the annual Spring Break festivities. In the latest effort to keep the streets safe, APD reports 55 arrests have been made under the 'No Refusal' initiative, carried out from March 7 through March 17.19 of these arrests involved blood search warrants while the remaining 36 came through consent, with 24 related to breath samples and 14 to blood samples, according to the Austin Police Department.
The police also reported that a number of the total arrests involved more serious offenses. Specifically, 11 drivers recorded breath samples over 0.15, seven had previous convictions classing their charges as Class A misdemeanors, and three faced felony charges due to multiple prior convictions. In a grimmer tally, there was one case each for felony DWI with a child passenger, and intoxication manslaughter, as per the Austin Police Department. These enhanced charges highlight the severe risks and potential consequences of driving while impaired, on the roads often populated by families and spring break revelers, alike.
Determined to lower the grim statistics of accidents and fatalities on local thoroughfares, APD's 'No Refusal' initiative is part of a broader strategy that combines education with stern enforcement. The goal is to make Austin's streets safer for residents and visitors. The program allows police to obtain a warrant for a blood sample in cases where a suspected drunk driver refuses to take a breath test, a measure that law enforcement believes can deter would-be impaired drivers from even getting behind the wheel, as reported by the Austin Police Department.
