Bay Area residents are grappling with wet weather again as the National Weather Service (NWS) San Francisco anticipates continued rain chances through today, though they forecast drier conditions approaching by late week. According to the NWS forecast discussion issued early Wednesday morning, an upper low located off the Central Coast is expected to bring showers and a slight possibility of thunderstorms mainly south of the Monterey Bay area.
The NWS notes that while the rainfall will mostly register at a mild 0.1-0.2 inches for most regions, with the East Bay seeing negligible amounts, and the Santa Lucias potentially receiving up to 0.5 inches, the unsettled weather also promises a shift in wind directions and seasonal temperatures highs in the mid 60s and lows dipping into the upper 30s and 40s, looking ahead, high pressure will take control with more sunshine and stable climes, but a troughing pattern is expected to reintroduce rain chances by next week, although impact is predicted to be minimal at this juncture.
Additionally, the NWS Bay Area's X post feed warns of urban and small stream flooding caused by the excessive rainfall, this suggesting caution is warranted for those in low-lying areas. Mariners aren't left out of the advisories, as a Pacific low system's approach and southward path are ushering in a change from a gentle southerly breeze to a fresher northerly one later into Thursday, paired with the likelihood of rougher sea conditions.
For those hitting the roads early, the NWS Bay Area also provided a real-time update advising San Franciscans of heavy showers on route via X post this morning, recommending umbrellas and caution during the morning commute, the region's accustomed to its share of precipitation, but sudden downpours can quickly complicate travel and surge the risk of floods, a scenario the city wants to avoid.
