A young woman's life was tragically cut short at a raucous Southwest Side party last weekend, with details of the senseless act leaving a community in shock. Bexar County authorities have now identified the victim as 21-year-old Desirae Hope Garcia, confirmed dead from a gunshot wound to the head and her death has been ruled a homicide. Amid the chaos, a 29-year-old man was also shot but thankfully is expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries.
Deputies had rushed to the 8200 block of Old Pearsall Road around 4 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports of gunfire at what was described as an illegal party. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Javier Salazar, reported the event to quickly have become packed, following heavy promotion on social media. It was there they found Garcia, fatally wounded, after a dispute that turned deadly. Salazar expressed his disturbance at the callousness displayed as bystanders chose to record the dying woman rather than help, remarking in a news conference, "It’s pretty disturbing that we do have information from some of the witnesses that people sat there and videotaped this little girl as she was dying, taking her last breath," as reported by KSAT.
The gathering, which saw approximately 20 witnesses engage with law enforcement, was scoured for evidence, with Salazar mentioning some video from the party being obtained which chillingly captures the woman's final moments. It's not known whether the victims were acquainted prior to the event. The sheriff's office is actively investigating the homicide, piecing together the moments leading up to the tragedy.
Hours following the incident, a man was arrested at the scene, albeit on an unrelated controlled substance charge. The male, whose identity remains undisclosed, was also found to be carrying a weapon, though it has not been confirmed if he is connected to the deadly incident. Sheriff Salazar highlighted this detail during the news briefing, hinting at potential leads the authorities are following up on. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is appealing to anyone with information about the shooting to get in touch by calling 210-335-6000 or email at [email protected].
