The weeks-long search for Riley Strain, a missing University of Missouri student, came to a sad conclusion when his body was recovered from Nashville's Cumberland River, officials confirmed. Strain, 22, was spotted by a work crew just before 7:30 a.m. on Friday, some eight miles from downtown Nashville, The Tennessean reported.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, Strain was still wearing the same shirt and watch that he had on when he vanished on March 8, aiding in the swift identification of his remains. Police Chief John Drake, announced at a press conference that no signs of foul play-related trauma were observed on the body, "An autopsy is pending," as stated on NBC News.
The initial call to the police was made by an employee who noticed the body while clearing debris from the river, WSMV detailed. The subsequent retrieval and confirmation process involved multiple agencies, including the Nashville Fire Department and the medical examiner's office.
The tragic discovery concludes a period of intense searching and uncertainty for Strain's family and friends, who have been seeking answers since his disappearance earlier this month. As the local community grapples with the loss, plans for a vigil to remember the young man are underway, which underscores the breadth of the impact his disappearance has wrought, The Tennessean noted. Further information regarding the circumstances of Strain's death are expected to be released following the autopsy results.
