A U.S. Border Patrol sharpshooter took down an armed assailant in the rugged terrain of California's Otay Mountains earlier this month, the agency reported. In the predawn hours of March 3, the specially trained Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) responded to recent violent crimes against migrants by stationing agents, including a marksman, in an overwatch position near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. According to an official release on CBP's website, an armed confrontation erupted on a paved road within the jurisdiction of the rugged borderlands.
As four individuals accosted migrants traversing the twisting mountain path, a handgun-wielding man demanded money and chambered a round, aiming his weapon directly at a migrant. Seizing the moment, the BORTAC marksman, perched 275 yards away, discharged a fatal shot. "They observed the armed individual threaten the migrants, chamber a round, and point a gun at one of the migrants – at which time the BORTAC precision marksman fired one round, striking the armed individual," detailed the Border Patrol agents involved in the incident.
The aftermath unfolded with swift and measured protocols: agents called in the shooting at 6:59 a.m. and promptly requested medical backup. A duo of Border Patrol EMTs arrived within minutes, embarking on desperate life-saving efforts that spanned 45 grueling minutes. The suspect, lying wounded from the sniper's single bullet, succumbed to his injury upon the late arrival of San Diego County Fire EMS, despite their arduous attempts to revive him with advanced care.
Further adding to the complexity of the event, agents captured 17 migrants in the vicinity, while three possible accomplices fled the scene across the invisible line into Mexico. With an autopsy of the Mexican national, age 32, pending at the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, the interwoven threads of human desperation and border enforcement have been drawn tight, awaiting the scrutiny promised by the May 25, 2022, Executive Order on policing and public safety practices. CBP has committed to "expeditiously releasing the body worn camera footage of this incident," aligning with governmental transparency.
