Brooklyn Park has declared March 25-29 as Recycling Week, a campaign aimed at ensuring the proper disposal of recyclables. Taking a step beyond the regular blue bin routine, the local government is dialing up its efforts to spread the word on the do’s and don'ts of recycling.
The recycling cart needs to be on the curb by 6:30 a.m. City crews will have a full day's work, wrapping up collections by 6:00 p.m. Avoid creating obstacles for the waste warriors, and bins should be at least three feet away from mailboxes, other carts, or any other potential hindrances. The city's sanitation department reminds residents that carts should be on their driveway or boulevard—not on the street, with the handle facing away from the asphalt.
"Have material loose in your cart, never in bags," advises a bulletin released by the city. Allegedly, even the most well-intentioned bagged recyclables are destined for the dump at sorting facilities, as plastic bags end up trashed unopened, and paper bags could jam up the works during compaction.
Brooklyn Park has rolled out the HRG Recycling app, a digital helping hand for eco-friendly endeavors. The app can be downloaded here and is available in English, French, Russian, Spanish, or Vietnamese.
