Tragedy struck Chicago as young Jayden Perkins was murdered, a crime that also involved the attempted murder of his mother. Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his devastation over the incident, emphasizing on the urgency to address systemic issues and support those affected by domestic and gender-based violence. "This despicable crime is a horrific reminder of the need for us to correct systemic failures," Johnson said in a statement obtained by Chicago's official website.
Reiterating the city's commitment, the Mayor highlighted the availability of resources for survivors and their families, pointing to partnerships such as The Network: Advocating Against Domestic Violence, which supports the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline. Victims or witnesses to violence are encouraged to reach out by calling or texting 1-877-863-6338, accessible 24/7 and in Spanish. Chicago's law enforcement was commended by Johnson for bringing swift justice in the case of Jayden.
Concrete steps have been taken to coordinate resources for the victim's family and their community. Emergency funding and other forms of aid have been dispensed. Additionally, the Chicago Public Schools and community-based victim service teams are extending their support to students and community members shaken by Jayden's death.
The mayor's statement reflected both grief and resolve. "Jayden was a bright light in his community. We grieve alongside his family and community as we reckon with this unthinkable loss," he said. The focus remains on enhancing resources in collaboration with advocates, the County, and the State, acknowledging that the work ahead is substantial.
