A Chicago man is facing serious charges after a road rage incident turned violent on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Eric Peterson, 26, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder following the altercation that occurred early Monday morning, according to the Illinois State Police.

The confrontation began when Peterson's vehicle and another car sideswiped each other near 91st Street around 12:30 a.m. In the heat of the moment, Peterson allegedly escalated the situation by pulling out a gun and firing at the other vehicle. The targeted car was hit by the gunfire, but, fortunately, the driver was unharmed, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Law enforcement officials apprehended Peterson on Wednesday after tracking down his vehicle in suburban Country Club Hills. A handgun, believed to be used in the shooting, was also seized at the time of Peterson's arrest. CBS Chicago stated a weapon was recovered during the arrest.

Peterson is currently being held at the Riverdale Police Department, awaiting a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday, March 13. The incident, which is another mark against the city beset by gun violence, remains under investigation by state police. Details about what led up to the confrontation, or how the officers managed to locate Peterson have not been released.
