Chicago's cherished architectural marvels are sounding the alarm, with the latest roundup from Preservation Chicago pinpointing the city's seven most imperiled edifices. A roll call of diverse structures, spanning from the Loop's historical high-rises to a fire-ravaged mansion in Bronzeville, these buildings are grappling with threats from potential demolition to severe neglect.

The Century and Consumers Buildings have made repeat appearances on the endangered roster, securing their dubious place for a fifth time. Despite a federal infrastructure bill earmarking $52 million for their demolition in 2022, Hope persists as the Department of Planning's preservation division recently voted for a preliminary landmark designation for the high-rises, according to Block Club Chicago.

These structures pay homage to the bygone Chicago School of Architecture, yet, funds have been apportioned by Congress to raze them to the ground, setting advocacy efforts to preserve them on a crucial tipping point, NBC Chicago reported.

The list also includes Avalon Park's Chicago Vocational School and the Swift-Morris Mansion. Each carries its significant narrative, with the latter having narrowly survived a fire last December. The mansion's charred remains are calling for swift action. Preservation Chicago urges for its stabilization to prevent further damage and its ultimate rehabilitation – a fitting tribute to its business history and social service legacy on the South Side, Block Club Chicago notes.

Meanwhile, the struggle continues for Bronzeville's Swift House, seeking salvation after a disastrous fire in December 2023. An arson investigation is underway, and Preservation Chicago fears the worst for the property's future, given the severe blaze damage. The historic Northside Stranger’s Home Missionary Baptist Church with murals by William Walker, once a beacon for the Cabrini-Green community, is another cultural touchstone that risks fading away into obscurity if the dedicated efforts to preserve it go unheard, as per NBC Chicago.
