In an effort to guide young minds towards better decision-making, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida recently hosted students from Bowman Ashe/Doolin K-8 Academy on a field trip focusing on the consequences of poor choices. The event, part of the Making Smarter Choices outreach program by the office's Law Enforcement Coordination and Community Outreach Section, aimed to dissuade students from a life of crime through hard-hitting, real-world examples and interactive legal experiences.

As reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, the program included emotionally charged inmate testimonial videos, which underscored the irreversible nature of some decisions and the importance of seeking redemption. "If I could be the good for you then maybe you could be the good for me," an incarcerated inmate, serving a 25-year sentence for murder, implored the students. J.D. Smith, Chief of LEC/COS, emphasized to his captivated audience that every day poses a significant choice with long-lasting repercussions: "Each day you have a choice to make," he said, "Am I going to be a good person or a bad person? It’s a daily decision that is in your hands."

The program also involved a mock trial, where students were assigned various roles in the courtroom, simulating a murder case resulting from extreme fraternity hazing. According to Smith, the exercise not only educated students about the justice system but also challenged them to display confidence and clarity in public speaking. "The team that wins will be the one that can step up to the microphone and deliver," Smith told the students. The hands-on approach received glowing feedback from participants, as reflected in post field trip evaluation forms.

This immersive experience goes beyond a simple cautionary tale by actively engaging students in the legal process, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Michele S. Vigilance taking on the role of judge. The event served two purposes, providing an eye-opening look at the severe consequences of criminal behavior, while also feeding the aspirations of those interested in legal careers. "Our field trip gives them a sense of what it’s like," said Smith, speaking to the program's efficacy in combining real-life storytelling with aspirational role-play for the students.
