A Detroit man has been arrested following the fatal shooting of his nephew during a birthday party on the city's east side, police report. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night around 7:30 p.m. in a residence located on Bishop Street near King Richard Street, close to Interstate 94 and Cadieux Road.
Detroit Police Cpl. Dan Donakowski, speaking to The Detroit News, revealed that the altercation developed into a domestic dispute, resulting in one adult male shooting another. Although officials didn't provide specifics on the ages of the two men or their relationship, information obtained by WXYZ indicates the victim was in his early 50s and the suspect is the victim's uncle.
The suspect, after the shooting, fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities at a hospital. It remains unspecified as to why he was at the hospital or if he sustained any injuries. According to FOX 2 Detroit, Detroit Police Commander Ryan Connor said that the suspect "appeared at a local hospital armed with a handgun," and was detained by officers after the hospital security alerted the police.
Officials also confirmed the recovery of a weapon believed to be tied to the shooting. The investigation into the incident continues, with no other injuries reported. Sharing insights into the incident, Detroit's Deputy Chief Arnold Williams mentioned to the media that alcohol was involved in the dispute, elaborating in his conversation with WXYZ, "There was a domestic dispute, there was of course alcohol involved." The police had even made brief contact with the suspect over the phone before his device's battery expired.
The suspect initially eluded police by visiting his own home in the 18900 block of Lesure Street near Seven Mile and the Lodge Freeway on the city's west side, following the escape in a pickup truck, further details published by WXYZ. After, he showed up at the hospital where officers took him into custody.
