The city of Detroit has crowned the French bulldog as its favorite pet for the third consecutive year, according to the latest rankings by the American Kennel Club (AKC). These pint-sized pooches have not only charmed their way into the hearts of Detroiters, but they've also claimed the top spot nationwide for the second year in a row.
As reported by ClickOnDetroit, the AKC cited the breed’s "playful and adaptable" nature as a key factor in their popularity. Alongside their temperament, it's not hard to see why these compact canines have become a fixture in the urban environment of Motor City. The popularity surge seems to extend beyond the confines of city living, with Frenchies also reigning supreme in Denver and Miami.
In Detroit's canine hierarchy, French bulldogs are followed by Rottweilers, German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, and Labrador Retrievers, as detailed by the Detroit Free Press. The nationwide list features similar breeds, with the notable inclusion of Poodles, Dachshunds, and German Shorthaired Pointers among the top ten.
One breed making significant inroads is the beagle, which ascended to Detroit's 12th most popular breed, up from 27th the previous year. "Beagles are a great addition to families, especially ones that already have other dogs," AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo stated, in a sentiment obtained by PRNewswire. This sizable leap reflects the breed's versatility and friendly nature.
However, the French bulldog's rise to stardom is not without its controversies. The breed's popularity has sparked a debate centered around the health issues bred into their cute, yet physiologically compromised snouts. Critics argue that these breathing challenges, accentuated by their short noses, are a reason the breed should no longer be propagated.
