A tragic hit-and-run incident has left a bicyclist dead in Palm Beach County, with the driver now suspected of driving under the influence, according to officials. The collision, which occurred early Friday morning at the intersection of Military Trail and Lantana Road, involved a 2011 Dodge Nitro SUV and a 55-year-old male bicyclist, as reported by WPTV.
Deputies said the SUV, driven by Christopher Ardella, 55, was heading northbound when the bicyclist, not wearing a helmet, entered the SUV's path, leading to the fatal event. Following the crash, Ardella initially stopped but then fled the scene, authorities mentioned. In a reckoning with the consequences, Ardella was found at his home nearby later, as per the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office report obtained by CBS12.
The victim was rushed to Delray Medical Center shortly after the accident, only to be pronounced dead at 8:17 a.m., WPTV stated. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera announced that they're withholding the victim's identity until the next of kin is notified. In addition, the crash report hinted at the possibility that either drugs or alcohol could have played a role in the crash, a detail that still awaits final confirmation as the investigation progresses.
Concerns over road safety in Palm Beach County have further been amplified by this incident, stirring community awareness. Locals, including Bethany Perez, who reportedly grew up in the area, expressed her worries to WPTV about the congested traffic and frequent breaking of traffic laws by both drivers and cyclists. Adding another layer to the conversation, Perez said, "No," when asked if she felt safe crossing intersections in her daily routine. In an interview with WPTV, resident cyclist Michael Szaksez emphasized the importance of safety precautions – such as wearing a helmet and using lights – while also advocating for more bike lanes to enhance the safety for those on two wheels.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office mentioned that Ardella is cooperating with investigators. However, it has not been stated whether he will face charges as of yet.
