The shots rang out near Chicago Blu'z Bar & Grill on the city's west side. According to a FOX 2 Detroit report, the incident unfolded before 2:45 a.m. when an argument turned into a physical altercation and, the suspect, fleeing the scene, only to return with a firearm and open fire on the crowd.
Detroit Asst. Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald characterized the incident as "senseless, ridiculous," noting that "five people to be shot over a parking spot is just silly to me," in a statement obtained by CBS Detroit. The victims, with ages spanning from 33 to 49, were reported to be in stable condition. However, the shooter managed to escape in what was described as a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Hyundai, and remains at large.
Further deepening the issue, questions arose regarding the operational status of the venue. Asst. Police Chief Fitzgerald pointed out that the nightclub should not have been serving patrons at the near 3 a.m. crime hour – a sentiment echoed across multiple reports. "This blues club should not have been open at 2:45 a.m. where they're still arguing for a parking spot," Fitzgerald told The Detroit News. Authorities are also investigating why people were at the club beyond allowed hours, with Fitzgerald addressing the establishment had not encountered major disturbances in the last 18 months.
Following the shooting, the investigation has been fortified with security footage capturing the suspected shooter, but his identity remains unknown. The police are calling on the public for support.
