FLOSSMOOR, Ill. – Residents of the south Chicago suburb of Flossmoor are up in arms over the possible ouster of their police chief, Jerel Jones. Hundreds gathered at the Flossmoor Village Hall to loudly voice their discontent, as rumors swirled that Mayor Michelle Nelson and Village Manager Bridget Wachtel are seeking to remove Jones from his position, according to CBS Chicago.
Despite the turnout and the heated atmosphere, no official reason has been provided for the potential termination. Chief Jones himself remained tight-lipped, stating, "I am not at liberty to discuss anything as it pertains to a personnel matter or anything in regards to my relationship with Mayor Nelson," he told CBS Chicago. The same event saw residents accusing the village leadership, of effecting a "public lynching" if plans to remove the chief and his deputy were to proceed.
Adding to the fervor of the night, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx appeared among the supporters, as reported by BNN Breaking News. The mayor and village manager, however, allowed only 30 minutes for public comments, providing no clarification on the situation. This limited engagement has only intensified the community's demand for transparency and answers.
While Jones' future hangs in the balance, it's clear his connection with the Flossmoor community remains solid. “I'm a veteran police chief, and my heart is with this community,” Jones said. He also noted his respect for Nelson, highlighting he is, "a mayoral appointment." With attorneys now involved on both sides, a statement or news conference is expected on Tuesday, as per CBS News Chicago.
