Fort Lauderdale's downtown area is preparing for a smoother flow of water and traffic, despite a temporary bout of construction-induced nocturnal disturbances. Beginning on March 11, after securing the necessary permits, Comtech Engineering teamed up with the City of Fort Lauderdale to replace an aging 1,400-foot stretch of water main on SE 1st Avenue, extending from Broward Boulevard to the New River. According to an update published by the city, the project, originally announced on February 2, aims to conclude by summer this year, deploying corrosion-resistant PVC pipes ranging from 12 to 16 inches in diameter to better withstand the elements.
The facelift, demanding some overnight work, is set to primarily occur under the cover of night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., beginning Sunday, March 17 through Thursday, March 21 and then resuming Sunday, March 24 through Thursday, March 28, as per the city's latest construction update. Residents should brace to adjust their nocturnal habits, as one lane on SE 1st Avenue may be closed in each direction within the project limits during these hours. Flaggers will be present to direct to smoothly manage the traffic.
Noise is inevitable when it comes to construction of such scale, and the city's advisory doesn't shy away from mentioning potential disturbances. Noisy machinery, backup alarms, and the general clatter typical of heavy construction will infiltrate the night air. However, contractors have pledged to soften the auditory blow by implementing noise-reducing strategies like barrier placement, strategic equipment positioning, and conducting thorough noise-level checks.
It's not just the din that the project will bring; lighting is also on the agenda to ensure the workers can clearly see what they are doing. Bright lights are necessary, but they will be carefully aimed to minimize the glare encroaching upon nearby homes. The lights are to be shielded so as to illuminate only the essential work areas, gently threading the needle between construction necessity and residential peace.
