A man has been arrested in Georgia in connection with the fatal shooting of his cousin, whose body was found on the side of a road in West Palm Beach, Florida, last October.
46-year-old Gary Everett was taken into custody on a second-degree murder charge at his Milledgeville residence, confirmed by police on Feb. 21. According to CBS12, the victim, identified as 37-year-old Victor Devore Howard, was discovered on the side of the road near 45th Street and Military Trail in West Palm Beach after a distress call to 911 at 3:30 a.m. on October 10, 2023.
Howard was found critically injured but, died an hour after being taken to St. Mary's Medical Center, according to authorities. Initially, police received misleading information from Everett, who claimed his cousin had been shot in Gramercy Park on Parke Ave. However, a subsequent investigation by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office countered his account, determining the shooting did not occur in the area Everett indicated.
The West Palm Beach Police Department told WPTV, investigative efforts led to evidence that pinpointed Everett as the gunman. The fatal incident is believed to have happened inside Howard's work car, where a single bullet casing was recovered. The Palm Beach County medical examiner confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, and detectives discovered that a significant amount of cash had been stolen from the victim.
Everett, who had been found in possession of the bloody vehicle belonging to his cousin, provided no insight into the circumstances surrounding the gunshot wound at the time of the incident. He was booked at the Georgia Baldwin County Jail awaiting extradition to Florida. His extradition to face the charges in Florida is pending.
