Google is tightening the reins on its Gemini chatbot, restricting election-related queries as voters in the U.S. and India gear up for their respective polls. The Silicon Valley giant announced on Tuesday that the move is a precautionary step to ensure the dissemination of high-quality information, as reported by NBC San Diego. "We take our responsibility for providing high-quality information for these types of queries seriously, and are continuously working to improve our protections," the company cited in a blog post.

Last month, Google encountered a setback when it pulled an AI image generation tool amidst historical inaccuracies and user complaints. At a conference, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google's DeepMind, expressed the company's intentions to fix and promptly reinstate the product. "We are hoping to have that back online very shortly in the next couple of weeks, few weeks," Hassabis told NBC San Diego. Google's rebranding efforts with Gemini aim to position it as a true AI assistant, an ambition supported by Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google's parent company Alphabet.

Deep concerns about AI's role in spreading falsehoods during election seasons have intensified since the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. Josh Becker, a California state senator, shared his trepidations with CNBC, "There is reason for serious concern about how AI could be used to mislead voters in campaigns." This unease coincides with a dramatic increase in AI-generated deepfakes, underlining the race between technology advancements and regulatory measures to prevent misinformation.

Simultaneously, Google affirms its commitment to supporting the integrity of Indian elections through information dissemination and stringent policy enforcement, as detailed in a blog post. In collaboration with the Election Commission of India, the tech behemoth has implemented strategies to present authoritative information on Google Search and YouTube, helping voters find critical details about registration and voting procedures. Google deploys both human oversight and advanced AI models to weed out policy-violating content, utilizing recent advancements in large language models for more responsive and adaptive enforcement.

Google’s digital efforts are comprehensive, extending to aspects such as election ad transparency, misinformation countermeasures, and enhancing public education on AI-generated content. The company is pioneering methods like embedded watermarking and industry-wide collaborations to combat deceptive AI-generated content ahead of global elections. Google’s determined stride in the realm of AI agents and election support systems underscores a broader tech industry trend, as executives from Microsoft to Amazon also emphasize the importance of these tools not only for productivity but also as guardians against digital deception.
