A tragic discovery on a Michigan highway has left a local family mourning the untimely loss of 25-year-old Ruby Garcia. On Friday night, Michigan State Police were alerted to the grim scene on southbound US-131 near Leonard Street, where they found a woman deceased with apparent gunshot wounds, as WOODTV reported.
Authorities have since identified the victim as Ruby Garcia of Grand Rapids and confirmed they have a person of interest in custody in relation to the ongoing death investigation. A Michigan State Police statement obtained by WZZM13 disclosed the arrest but withheld the suspect's identity.
Mavi Garcia, Ruby's sister, has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses, sharing on the fundraising page, "Anything helps, and we appreciate the help. Thank you to everyone who has supported us through these tough times, we appreciate all the love. Forever Ruby’s World." In addition, Mavi Garcia reflected on her sister's vivacious character in a statement to FOX 17, saying, “She would brighten up the room with her beautiful smile. She loves to travel, was dedicated to her work, and enjoyed being with her family in her free time.”
"She will be remembered as being full of life and laughter, those who were around her would know she was silly and made everyone laugh... Her life was taken too soon. She deserved to live life, travel the world, have kids, and follow her dreams," Mavi said to WZZM13. As the Michigan State Police delve deeper into their investigation, they urge anyone with information to step forward and contact the Grand Rapids Post at (616) 866-4411 or Kent County Central Dispatch.
