HIALEAH — Seventeen-year-old Maurits Acosta has swiftly become a standout figure at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School, where his dedication to public service and political engagement is making waves. Acosta serves as class president, the Miami-Dade County Public School District Student Government Association vice president, and sits on the Miami Lakes Education Task Force, among other roles. CBS News Miami recently highlighted his impressive array of accolades, including being named a 2024 Outstanding Youth Advocate of the Year by the National PTA.
In what's surely a packed schedule for a high school junior, Acosta manages to balance academic excellence with a passion for civic activism. As reported by CBS News Miami, he's also the mastermind behind "Virtutem Populo," a nonprofit aimed at promoting civic engagement among youths in his community. Born to Cuban parents in the Netherlands, Acosta found his calling for public service after moving to the United States, realizing that age was no barrier to effecting change.
Acosta's dedication has not gone unnoticed by those around him. Lilibet Sosa, Assistant Principal of Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High, praised Acosta's rare blend of political awareness and commitment to the community. "Students like Maurits don't come around too often," Sosa remarked in a statement obtained by CBS News Miami. Teacher Rick Silberman also weighed in, describing Acosta as a "unicorn" and lauding his success in a range of projects he's been involved with, based on an interview by CBS News Miami.
Despite his natural inclination for leadership, Acosta admits that it was challenging to get adults to listen initially. "It definitely was hard in the beginning, getting adults to listen to us but that's why I think it's so important that adults open their doors and that's something that I always tell elected officials when I meet with them never underestimate the power and the ability that young folks have to make a difference," Acosta told CBS News Miami.
On track to graduate with over 12 Advanced Placement courses under his belt, and an associate's degree from Miami Dade College, Acosta's future, though not cemented in a specific field of study, is clearly committed to a life of public service. According to another source, liftaratanbrsha.lighting, Acosta has yet to decide on his exact path but is sure about his dedication to the greater good. His story stands as an inspiring testament to the impact that young, driven individuals can have on their communities and beyond.
