A West Michigan man was shot dead by a homeowner during a reported break-in early Monday, triggering an ongoing investigation by local law enforcement, officials said.

The altercation took place around 1:50 a.m. in the 700 block of Chatterson Road, Egelston Township, where the 38-year-old suspect, apparently intoxicated, initiated the violent chain of events by aggressively banging on the window of an apartment.
