
A blaze ripped through a church in the Greater OST / South Union Area, causing an estimated $200,000 in damages, officials said. The fire, which enveloped the building located at 3535 Lydia St., broke out on the night of February 29, 2024, at approximately 11:49 p.m., with no reported injuries, according to a press release.
Responding within a mere three minutes, firefighters from several stations including 25, 23, and 21, arrived at the scene to find the church already engulfed in flames. Made quickly was an aggressive attack on the fire, and a primary search was conducted to ensure no one was trapped inside. A total of 38 personnel responded to the incident, demonstrating the rapid response capacity of the Houston Fire Department.
The fire was eventually extinguished, with crews thoroughly checking for hotspots to prevent a possible re-ignition. Utilities at the property were secured as part of standard safety measures. The actual cause of the fire remains under investigation, with arson investigators from the HFD being called in to determine the source and cause of the inferno.
The loss of the church represents a substantial financial and emotional impact on the community it served. Even though there were no physical injuries reported, the congregation will have to contend with the loss of their spiritual home until restoration is possible, which was home to countless memories and moments of solace for its members. The church had just wrapped up its financial audit for the year, according to a statement from one of the church officials.
