The Empire State's tourism just got a significant cash infusion, as Governor JB Pritzker stamped a $4.6 million grant approval for various local tourism organizations in Illinois. According to an announcement released earlier today, 20 beneficiaries will benefit from the Tourism Private Sector Grant Program, part of a state campaign aimed at expanding Illinois' attractiveness to visitors and strengthening the touristic economy.
"Here in Illinois, our tourism industry is booming, and we're not letting up," Governor JB Pritzker announced, emphasizing the state's commitment to bolstering local events and attractions. The grants are designed to spice up the visitor experience with novel festivals and assorted tourism-related projects. However, the program isn't just about throwing bigger parties. "Illinois' tourism industry is about more than fun experiences, it's also about history, community and preserving the diverse stories that make Illinois so special," Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton said in the same statement, recognizing the deeper cultural impact these efforts are meant to sustain.
Administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), the program promises to support new, expanded, or enhanced tourism ventures. Each grant will cover a range of necessities from marketing and advertising to transportation, rentals, and entertainment to ensure optimal experiences for visitors. Eligibility for the funding extended to non-profits, government entities, for-profits, and local promotional groups, with the stipulation that recipients match the funds provided with private sector contributions.
Backing up the financial news with hard numbers, state officials reveal hotel tax revenue hit record numbers in FY23, pulling in $308 million. Tourism is a cash cow for Illinois. "The State of Illinois is promoting some of our greatest assets throughout the state to visitors from near and far," Rep. Janet Yang-Rohr (D-Naperville) said, highlighting the broad geographical aim of the campaign. Coupled with the success of the "Middle of Everything" initiative, Illinois has seen a substantial increase in travel and spending. For every $1 spent on the campaign, $91 returns in visitor spending, while simultaneously fattening state and local tax coffers at a rate of $10 for every campaigned dollar.
Illinois welcomed 111 million visitors who dropped a cool $44 billion in 2022 — 14 million more travelers and $12 billion more than the previous year. Given these figures, one thing is clear: Illinois is counting on its storied appeal and cultural cache to keep the economic tills ringing and the state's economic heartbeat strong. "This funding will build on our current momentum, while simultaneously boosting our local economies,” said Sen. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago), underscoring this straightforward strategy. In the land of Lincoln, it seems history and recreation combine to fuel a robust financial future.
