In a major crackdown on expressway violence, Illinois State Police announced the arrest of four individuals connected to separate Chicago-area shootings. According to official reports, the suspects were apprehended in a swift action spanning just 24 hours, facing serious felony charges.
On the southbound lanes of Interstate 94, at the 47th Street marker, 26-year-old Jervon Whitaker from Chicago was arrested on March 19th and hit with an attempted murder charge for his alleged involvement in a January 26th road rage shooting. In a similar display of road rage gone too far, both Malik Sutherland and Victor Ponce, aged 20 from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, found themselves in cuffs facing the same charge for a January 17th incident where a driver's car was shot at on Illinois Route 53.
The Illinois State Police's tenacity was on full display as they also managed to close a nearly two-year-old case. Byron Moore, 28, of Chicago, was taken into custody on the same day as the other suspects, charged with aggravated battery with a firearm stemming from an April 2022 incident on Interstate 94.
All these incidents are stark reminders of the ongoing issue of expressway violence that has plagued Chicago. The successful arrests brought a sigh of relief to troubled expressway users, as suspects linked to the sporadic gunfire that has terrorized commuters are now facing justice. The Illinois State Police, in their relentless pursuit, pieced together evidence from the crime scenes, conducted interviews, and executed search warrants to apprehend those believed to be responsible for bringing this brand of chaos to the streets.
