
The Illinois State Police has released a video of a shooting incident involving their officers and a 37-year-old man on an interstate in McLean County in the interest of transparency. The February 24th confrontation ended with the man, identified as Trayvon Little, being fatally shot by police after he allegedly pointed a firearm at them. The incident, which occurred on I-55 northbound near Lexington at around 12:42 p.m., was also confirmed to involve gunfire directed at another vehicle by Little before the police arrival.
There were no other injuries reported from the encounter. The officers were responding to a call about a man with a gun and shots fired involving the two vehicles that were stopped on the shoulder. Upon their arrival, the escalated situation led to an exchange of gunshots, resulting in a fatal outcome for Little, according to the Illinois State Police.
In line with a policy prioritizing integrity and open communication, the Illinois State Police consulted with the McLean County State’s Attorney and obtained authorization before making the footage public. Little's family was given the chance to review the video before its broader release. The video of the shooting is now accessible through the ISP website for those who wish to view the events leading up to and including the incident.
This continues to be a developing story as the Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation forges ahead with its probe into the shooting. The entire case is under the scrutiny of the McLean County State's Attorney's Office.
