Last Thursday, a violent crash in a Chicago suburb claimed the life of an Itasca man and injured another driver, causing turmoil on the streets of Elmhurst. CBS reports that police responded to a multi-car crash involving an Infiniti sedan, an Acura sedan, a Toyota minivan, and a Lexus SUV around 7 p.m. between Argyle and Mitchell Avenues. The driver of the Infiniti, a 20-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Toyota driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
It appears that the deceased had been involved in an earlier collision and did not stop, leading to a high-speed pursuit by the other motorist. In an attempt to overtake an Acura on St. Charles Road, his Infiniti crossed the centerline and first collided with an Acura then crashed head-on with the Toyota, as per BNNBreaking. The Lexus was subsequently struck by flying debris from the collisions. The identity of the Infiniti driver has been withheld until the next of kin are notified.
The Elmhurst Police, alongside the DuPage MERIT Major Crash Reconstruction Team, are investigating the crash. They are looking into the possibility that intoxication was a factor in this fatal sequence of events. This line of inquiry speaks to a pattern, the repercussions of which have irreparably altered the fabric of multiple families in the aftermath.
The repercussions of this crash have deeply affected the Elmhurst community, both rattling and rallying its residents. There have been outcries for better road safety and stark warnings against the perils of intoxicated and reckless driving. In the wake of the tragedy, local authorities are calling on witnesses to step forward with any information that could help piece together the night's events. Meanwhile, the part of St. Charles Road where the incident occurred was closed for hours, signaling an extensive and ongoing investigation process.
