A local Florida woman, Melissa Comstock, is fighting for her life in the ICU following a brutal stabbing earlier this month, with her family publicly thanking the bystander who intervened to save her. Comstock was attacked by her ex-husband in a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea parking lot on March 10, according to Local 10 News. Comstock's family says the ex learned of her recent engagement and attacked her during a weekend visit to her children.

David Spaulding, the good Samaritan in question, happened to hear screams and didn't hesitate to act, discovering the violent scenario inside a Jeep where Comstock was being stabbed. "You helped our family, you saved our sister, her daughter," Monique Morrison, Comstock's sister, expressed her gratitude in a statement obtained by Local 10 News. Morrison also extended her thanks to Spaulding's daughter.

Spaulding confronted Matthews, who then "just calmly walked off," Spaulding recalled in an interview with Local 10 News. After intervening, he applied pressure to Comstock's neck wounds, a critical action that was later noted by medical professionals as a lifesaving maneuver. "The surgeon said that if you wouldn't have done what you did, she would have been dead," Elizabeth Tolbert, Comstock’s mother, told Spaulding.

Despite the severity of her injuries, including brain bleeds, Comstock is expected to make it through, but faces a long road of rehabilitation. "It's the worst day of my life," Morrison said, according to a report from Local 10 News. "I never want my sister to go through this. She's an innocent person in all of this." Tolbert also attributed her daughter's survival to a higher power, saying "God put you there for a reason, He really did," in gratitude to Spaulding.

Now Comstock's children are with their older sister as the family grapples with the financial strain of the medical costs, given that Comstock did not have insurance.
