A man has been left fighting for his life following a shooting that erupted at Serenity Towers on South Highland Street in Memphis on Saturday afternoon. The Memphis Police Department rushed to the scene shortly before 12:30 p.m. where they discovered the wounded individual, WREG reported.
The victim was promptly taken to Regional One Hospital and is reported to be in critical condition. While the man clung to life, the officers scoured the area for answers. Investigators are currently piecing together the moments leading up to the gunfire, but they have yet to release suspect information. According to Action News 5, the shooting took place near Douglass Avenue at the address recognized to many as a refuge from the city's clamor.
Troubling the residents is a concern that violence is encroaching ever closer to their own thresholds. "It's getting closer and closer to me and that's all I can say," a resident conveyed their unease in an interview with WREG. They added, "I don’t know who shot who or why but it's disturbing when it's in your own front yard." The residents of Serenity Towers have been confronting a series of recent adversities, including an incident earlier this month when several awoke to find their vehicles inexplicably towed, each facing steep fees to recover them.
Despite the recent chaos, a resident named Frida holds steadfast to her abode in Serenity Towers, a place she once associated with tranquility. "This is my home. I’ve been here for seven years and when I first chose Serenity Towers, I chose it because of the name," Frida shared with WREG. Her experience has been mostly peaceful until the onset of the latest incidents. "I'm gonna stay right here and just see what happens as long as nothing happens to me personally," she resolved.
Memphis Police Department has not provided additional details at this time regarding the shooting as the investigation is ongoing. Concerns about safety are heightened among the community, as investigators seek to determine the motive and identity of the perpetrator responsible for the shooting at the complex, which is located at 400 S. Highland St., as detailed by FOX13 Memphis. Residents hope for swift justice and a return to the serenity their home once promised.
