A teenager accused of fatally shooting a Memphis street vendor known as "Red the Watermelon Man" has been released on bond, causing mixed feelings in the Berclair community. Demarion Tackett, 16, faces charges including first-degree murder, robbery, aggravated robbery, and employing a firearm during a dangerous felony for allegedly killing John Materna on May 15, 2023, according to information from Action News 5.
Materna's death shocked the local area where the victim was an endearing presence known for selling watermelons at the corner of Homer Street and Wayne Avenue, the site of the tragedy as stated by WREG; he succumbed to his injuries two weeks after the incident, after being removed from life support, leaving a community to mourn its loss while the teenage suspect posted the $100,000 bond required for his release, as his actions prior are currently under scrutiny while he awaits further legal proceedings.
Tackett was only 15 when he was arrested following the fatal event and has since been detained until the recent bond posting. Details from Yahoo News indicate that the young defendant will soon return to the streets, a turn of events which raises questions about the judicial balance between alleged culpability, the gravity of the crime, and the tenets of juvenile justice in cases as severe as this.
