A South Florida man's dream of renovating his historic Miami home turned into a financial and domestic nightmare after two unlicensed contractors allegedly bilked him out of $135,000 and left his house in shambles.
John Thomas entrusted his home's renovation to Luis Gustavo Arvelo Teran and Maria de los Angeles Rosales Solorzano, who swooped in with promises of a complete revamp of his 1926-built abode Thomas, a member of the United States Air Force found the pair through a recommendation and didn't suspect they would ravage his finances and his home. The debacle unfolded when Thomas deployed, giving the couple a substantial down payment only to return to what was once his home, now gutted and inhabitable, he, in a statement obtained by CBS News Miami, regretted.
The couple, operating as Luma Solutions Corp., started the renovation work in October 2022, having Thomas pay up half of the agreed upon $270,000 contract price. However, after tearing the house apart, they vanished, leaving Thomas with a shell of a home and hefty financial losses. "If you wanted to just take my money, take my money, Why did you have to just destroy my house? At least at that point I would have a place to live," Thomas told Local 10 News, lamenting the destruction of his property.
Following investigations, the duo were apprehended by Miami Police while they were at a Party City in Doral, the arrest bringing a semblance of closure, if not peace, to Thomas, who expressed some relief at the news of their capture. "At least now there is that satisfaction that they didn't get away with it and that brings a little bit of peace of mind," he said, as noted in the information by Local 10 News, the situation a stark reminder of the perils lurking in the trusting heart of an unsuspecting homeowner.
Currently, the pair face multiple serious charges including first-degree felony for grand theft by contractor, organized scheme to defraud, and contracting without a license. Miami-Dade jail records show that the Venezuelan nationals were no longer in custody as of Monday. Meanwhile, Miami Police are urging other potential victims who may have been scammed by these unlicensed contractors to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
