The Broward Sheriff's Office had placed a high priority on the case, enlisting the public's help to safely locate Gibson, who also requires medication for a thyroid condition. According to a Hoodline report, the last anyone had heard from her was through a photo she posted online after landing in the Sunshine State.
The ordeal began to quickly unravel after Gibson's phone number was found to have been reassigned to a new owner, raising immediate concerns about her safety. Her mother, Linda Neely, had travelled to South Florida to join in the search and expressed her mounting concern in a statement obtained by Hoodline, pleading for her daughter's safe return and suggesting that Gibson may have been enticed to move to Florida by a job opportunity.
In the weeks leading up to her being found, Gibson's family alleged that she was thrown out of a hotel by her boyfriend, who also took her debit card, compounding her vulnerability.
