It's the end of an era in north Phoenix as Karl's Bakery, a community fixture for three decades, prepares to close its doors for the last time. The beloved bakery, which opened its doors in 1994, saw crowds of nostalgic patrons lining up for their final taste of signature doughnuts and pastries.
Owner Christine Boerner, overwhelmed by the outpour of support, told 12News, “We're trying our darndest to keep up with the demand,” as she tirelessly worked the dough.
The family-operated venue is not shuttering due to a drop in patronage; in fact, business is booming to the point of exhaustion with the kitchen crew operating on minimal sleep during the final week. The space is set to be taken over by a new business, with Boerner noting, “We're just replacing a Swiss Family for a New York family,” but regulars like Megan Harben and her daughters, who dropped by for one last box of goodies and some farewell embraces, attest that there will be no true substitution for Karl's Bakery or the connections it fostered.
