James Walker, the man serving a 30-year sentence for a notorious shooting spree along the Beeline Highway in Arizona, was found dead on Saturday in his prison cell. The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry confirmed that Walker, 44, appeared to have taken his own life at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Tucson. "Prison staff discovered Walker unresponsive in his housing unit on March 02, 2024, and conducted life-saving measures until paramedics arrived onsite," ADCRR said in a statement. Despite the efforts, he was pronounced deceased by the medical staff.
Walker's death marks an end to a violent history that began in 1995 when, at 16, he was convicted of second-degree murder after a Halloween costume dispute turned deadly. Released in January 2014 after spending 16 years behind bars, Walker could not seem to detach from a life entrenched in crime. In March 2016, just two months before the highway shooting, he was arrested for drug suspicion in a Mesa parking lot. During the arrest, he rammed into a police car, already hinting at the violence that was to further unfold.
In May 2016, Walker used an AR-15 rifle to target cars along an 18-mile stretch of State Route 87. According to reports from 12 News, his shooting spree injured two people and resulted in a hail of bullets raining onto a Department of Public Safety cruiser and other vehicles, with one car even catching fire. This event escalated to armed robbery when Walker carjacked a vehicle and continued his assault before being subdued by a police dog after giving resistance to surrender.
Walker's trial led to a December 2018 conviction of 15 counts of aggravated assault, two counts of armed robbery, and a dangerous drug violation. He had been incarcerated at the Tucson prison facility ever since. The announcement of his death now turns the page on a chapter that saw Arizona roads once turned into scenes of terror. The ADCRR states that Walker was found unresponsive and despite the prison staff performing life-saving attempts, the final curtain was drawn when paramedics arrived to only declare his demise.
The circumstances surrounding Walker's death will undergo a formal investigation by the medical examiner's office.
