The quest for accessibility in Palm Beach County's parks is gathering momentum as the county's Parks and Recreation Department ramps up efforts to ensure all facilities meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The department, aiming to create an environment where people of all abilities can revel in public recreational spaces, is currently drawing up a Transition Plan — a strategic move to improve the usability of existing parklands and facilities for individuals with disabilities, officials said.

In a bid to integrate local insights into the ongoing ADA compliance push, the Parks and Recreation Department is advocating for public participation through feedback collection. "We have made many accessibility improvements in parks and facilities, and it is important to the County that our parks and facilities are usable by people of all abilities," Bob Hamilton, Director of the Planning, Research, and Development Division, emphasized the county's dedication to inclusivity in a statement publicized by the department, the community is now invited to weigh in on these improvements which will define the utility of these communal spaces for generations, as per the Palm Beach County press release

On April 4, the department will host two open forums to dissect the necessities of persons with disabilities and to forge a plan reflective of such needs; they are calling on individuals with disabilities to voice their preferences and priorities at these discussions. Scheduled at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., the public meetings will be held at the Club Managers Association of America Therapeutic Recreation Complex, situated at 2728 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth, FL 33461, with each session estimated to span between 60 to 90 minutes.

Throughout these meetings, John McGovern from the W-T Group, LLC (WTG) Accessibility Practice will take the lead in reviewing ADA standards for existing parks and facilities, he will also unpack considerations from other departments that have influenced priority setting, coupled with presenting visual snapshots captured by the WTG audit squads of various Parks and Recreation sites. This visual presentation is expected to provide a clear window into the current state of accessibility across the county's green spaces.

Those planning to attend the meetings should RSVP by reaching out to Daniel Duenas at 561-966-6659 or sending an email to [email protected]. The department is eagerly anticipating public input, which will be instrumental in shaping Palm Beach County's parks into a beacon of accessibility for all to enjoy.
